We successfully located a bike shop in Le Havre which had new wheels for Caitlin, and left town around 10am. It wasn’t the most pleasant of city exists, with bike paths beginning and then abruptly ending, but we managed to get out. Coincidentally, Andrew also learned while in Le Havre that his grandfather arrived in Europe at this port prior to beginning his tour for World War II.
The small town across the Seine, Honfleur, made up for the industrial Le Havre and was a great small town to cycle through. There were a lot of Norman/English influences which made sense as we were a short ferry away from the UK.
We quickly returned to the French countryside and managed to find Andrew’s parents outside Raids! We spent two nights in the same B&B with them, which was lovely, and toured D-Day beaches and historical points on our rest day. We had a fantastic time hanging out with them in France, and also enjoyed being able to visit everything by car instead of bike! The Normandy visit provided incredible historical context for the small towns we would continue through as many were identified in museums or on tours.
